Neuro-Functional Integration, your adaptability and your health.
At UMOYA Chiropractic, we emphasise a distinctive approach known as Neuro-Functional Integration. This method focuses on the relationship between the nervous system (brain and spinal cord), the skull, the spine, and its connective tissues (muscles, ligaments, dura, etc.). The integration of these systems relates to an individual’s capacity to adapt to changes in their surroundings. One’s adaptive potential is crucial when it comes to our health.
To better understand this, consider a guitar string. A guitar string is attached at both the top and bottom of a guitar, and the tension of the string can only be adjusted from these two ends. The same principle applies to the spinal cord, which is primarily connected at the top and bottom of the spinal column. Therefore, the amount of tension on the spinal cord can be influenced by the mobility and position of the neck (top) and the pelvis (bottom).
An incorrect amount of tension on a guitar’s strings will result in a false or undesirable tone – known as being “out of tune”. Similarly, if there is abnormal tension on the spinal cord and its nerves, this disrupts their ability to function normally, possibly leading to numerous Secondary Conditions.
The purpose, therefore, is to identify and improve the underlying cause of any abnormal changes in the integration between the nervous system and bone structure (skull and spine), a phenomenon also referred to as a Neuro-Functional Shift. A Neuro-Functional Shift can have detrimental effects on your health, as it may impede the optimal functioning of your nervous system.
At UMOYA Chiropractic, our goal is to identify and address these shifts. This enables your nervous system to better regulate your body, allowing it to properly adapt to its environment – an essential characteristic of health.
