Does your low back pain keep coming back?

Low back pain can seriously get in the way.

Sometimes you feel it after sitting for too long. Sometimes when getting up. Sometimes during or after exercise. Sometimes it improves for a while, only to return again without a clear reason.

And then the familiar cycle begins.

Rest.
Stretching.
Massage.
Searching for exercises online.
Painkillers.
Doing less for a while.
Slowly building back up.
And then, just when you think it is finally gone, the back pain returns.

At UMOYA Chiropractic in Maastricht, we look beyond the place where you feel the pain.

Not because the pain is irrelevant. Far from it.

But because low back pain is often the signal, not the whole story.

Start with a 20-minute consultation.

Low back pain is not always just a back problem

Many people immediately think of muscles, discs, a “tilted pelvis” or one wrong movement when they experience low back pain.

And yes, those things can certainly play a role.

But your low back does not function in isolation. It is part of a larger system in which your spine, pelvis, hips, breathing, posture, nervous system, stress load and recovery capacity are constantly working together.

When that system can adapt well, your body can handle a lot.

You can sit. Lift. Train. Work. Sleep. Move. Recover.

But when the load becomes greater than your body can properly process, compensation often begins. Muscles hold more tension. Movement becomes more restricted. Posture changes. Breathing becomes more shallow. Your nervous system stays more alert.

And somewhere in that pattern, low back pain can appear.

Not always because something is “broken”.

But because your system is struggling to adapt well.

That distinction matters.

Because if you only treat the painful area, without understanding why that area keeps becoming overloaded, there is a good chance the problem will return.

Our approach to low back pain

At UMOYA Chiropractic, we do not work from the idea that every episode of back pain simply needs to be “cracked back into place”.

You see that version of chiropractic all over the internet. Someone lies on a table, there is a loud crack, everyone reacts as if a miracle has just occurred, and the algorithm politely applauds. Fine theatre. Not exactly how we look at health.

We look at function.

How does your spine move?
How does your body respond to load?
Where is your system holding tension?
Which areas are moving too little, or perhaps too much?
How do your posture, pelvis, breathing and nervous system work together?
And why does your low back keep becoming the weak link?

Our care is focused on improving the way your body functions, adapts and recovers.

That means we do not only ask:

“Where does it hurt?”

We also ask:

“Why does this area keep becoming overloaded?”

What we assess during an examination

If the first consultation suggests that UMOYA may be suitable for you, we schedule a full intake and neuro-functional assessment.

During this assessment, we may look at:

  • the mobility of your spine
  • the function of your pelvis and hips
  • posture and movement patterns
  • tension in muscles and connective tissues
  • neurological signs that may be relevant to your complaint
  • how your body deals with load, stress and recovery
  • possible compensation patterns higher or lower in the body

At UMOYA, we also use objective measurements, including our scan methods, to gain more insight into how your system is functioning. Not as a gimmick. Not as a diagnosis machine. But as extra information to help reveal patterns that you may not feel yourself.

You can read more about our broader approach on the page about Neuro-Functional Integration.

Low back pain from sitting, work or stress

Many back problems do not start with one dramatic moment.

No cinematic scene where someone heroically lifts a laundry basket and loses their spine to the universe.

Often, it is far more subtle.

Hours of sitting.
Driving.
Work pressure.
Poor sleep.
Not enough recovery.
Too little movement variety.
Training without enough build-up.
Stress that shows up in breathing, posture and muscle tension.

Your body constantly tries to adapt. That is normal. It is what the body is designed to do.

But when load keeps accumulating and recovery does not keep up, your system can become more sensitive. Then a small movement may suddenly feel like “the thing that caused it”, while the actual problem had been building for much longer.

That is why, with recurring low back pain, we do not only look at the back itself. We also look at the conditions in which that back has to function.

Back pain after exercise or training

Low back pain during or after training does not automatically mean exercise is bad for you.

Quite the opposite. Movement and strength training can be important for a strong, resilient body.

But training is load. And load requires adaptation.

When your body does not recover well enough, when technique changes under fatigue, or when certain areas in your spine, hips or pelvis are not working together efficiently, the low back may start doing more work than it should.

Then back pain is not just a “training problem”. It may be a sign that load and recovery are not properly matched.

When low back pain starts holding you back

Low back pain is not only frustrating because it hurts.

It often changes your behaviour.

You start moving more carefully.
You avoid certain exercises.
You lift differently.
You sit differently.
You sleep worse.
You trust your own body less.
You become worried that it could “go again” at any moment.

In that way, back pain can slowly become bigger than just a physical complaint. It becomes something you factor into your day, your work, your training and your plans.

That is exactly why it is important not to focus only on pain reduction, but also on confidence, function and resilience.

The goal is not to make you endlessly dependent on care.

The goal is to help your body better handle the life you ask of it.

What we do not do

At UMOYA Chiropractic, you do not receive a standard explanation where every back problem gets the same answer.

We do not pretend that all low back pain comes from one “misaligned vertebra”.
We do not promise miracle fixes.
We do not only treat the place where you feel pain.
We do not chase loud cracks.
We do not use fear to push you into care.

Low back pain can have different causes and contributing factors. Sometimes chiropractic care is appropriate. Sometimes another form of care is more suitable. Sometimes additional medical evaluation is needed.

That is why we start with a conversation.

Start with a 20-minute consultation

If your low back pain keeps returning, it makes sense that you want to understand what is going on.

That is why you can start at UMOYA with a 20-minute consultation.

This is a calm first conversation where we discuss:

  • what you are experiencing
  • how long it has been going on
  • what you have already tried
  • what triggers or relieves your symptoms
  • whether our way of working seems suitable for your situation
  • what a logical next step may be

During this consultation, we do not perform a full examination or treatment.

No pressure.
No rush.
No “quick crack and off you go”.

Just a first step to get clarity.

When should you contact your GP first?

Most low back pain is not dangerous, but some signs require medical assessment.

Contact your GP or emergency medical service first if your low back pain is accompanied by:

  • loss of control over bladder or bowel function
  • numbness around the saddle area
  • increasing weakness in one or both legs
  • fever or feeling seriously unwell
  • unexplained weight loss
  • recent significant fall or trauma
  • a history of cancer
  • severe pain that does not change with posture or movement

When in doubt, it is wise to seek medical advice first.

Boring, perhaps. But “waiting it out” is not always the noble act we like to pretend it is.

Why choose UMOYA for low back pain?

UMOYA Chiropractic is based in Maastricht and works from a neuro-functional view of health.

This means we do not only look at symptoms, but at how your body functions, compensates, recovers and adapts.

For low back pain, this means looking beyond the painful area.

We look at the whole picture:

  • your spine
  • your pelvis
  • your posture
  • your movement patterns
  • your stress and recovery load
  • your nervous system
  • your daily habits
  • your resilience and capacity

Our approach is especially suited to people who want to understand why complaints keep returning, and who are not only looking for temporary relief.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain

Can a Chiropractor help with low back pain?

Chiropractic care may be useful for some people with low back pain, especially when movement restrictions, tension, posture, pelvic function or recurring load play a role.

At UMOYA, we do not only look at where the pain is located. We look at how your body functions as a whole. During the first consultation, we discuss whether our approach seems suitable for your situation.

Does my back need to be cracked?

Not necessarily.

At UMOYA, Chiropractic care is not about chasing cracking sounds. A sound during an adjustment can sometimes occur, but the sound itself is not the goal.

The goal is better function, less unnecessary tension, and a body that can respond more effectively to load and recovery.

Is low back pain always a spinal problem?

No.

Low back pain can involve the spine, but it can also be influenced by the hips, pelvis, muscles, connective tissues, movement patterns, stress, sleep, training or prolonged sitting.

That is why we look beyond the painful area.

What if my back pain radiates into my leg?

Radiating pain, tingling or numbness in the leg can have different causes. Sometimes nerve irritation plays a role, such as in sciatica-like complaints.

That requires careful assessment. During the consultation, we discuss your symptoms and consider whether an examination at UMOYA makes sense, or whether you should first contact your GP.

How many visits will I need?

That depends on the person.

The duration and frequency of care depend on your symptoms, history, examination findings, resilience and goals.

At UMOYA, we do not use standard care plans where everyone gets the same schedule because it looks neat in a spreadsheet. First we assess, then we advise.

Can I come if I have already tried physiotherapy or exercises?

Yes.

Many people come to UMOYA because exercises, rest, massage or other approaches helped temporarily, but the complaints kept coming back.

That does not mean those approaches were “wrong”. It may simply mean there are underlying patterns that have not yet been fully addressed.

Is Chiropractic care suitable if I have a disc herniation?

That depends on your symptoms, neurological signs and medical situation.

If there are signs of serious nerve involvement or other red flags, you should be medically assessed first. If chiropractic care appears appropriate, we carefully consider what is safe and useful.

We do not claim to “make a herniation disappear”. We look at function, load and recovery within what is responsible.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral to schedule a consultation or examination.

If there are signs that medical assessment is needed first, we will tell you clearly.

Is Chiropractic care reimbursed?

Chiropractic care may be partly reimbursed through supplementary health insurance. This depends on your insurance provider and policy.

Check your policy conditions or visit our prices page.

What happens during the first consultation?

The first consultation is a conversation of about 20 minutes.

We discuss your complaint, your situation, what you have already tried, and whether UMOYA is likely to be suitable for you. No full examination or treatment takes place during this first conversation.

This makes the first step clear and low-pressure.
