A different way of looking at your body

Most people search for a Chiropractor because something hurts.

Your back.
Your neck.
Your head.
Your shoulder.
Your hip.
Your leg.

That makes sense.

Pain gets your attention. It interrupts your day. It changes how you move, work, sleep, train and live.

But pain is often the signal, not the whole story.

At UMOYA Chiropractic in Maastricht, we look deeper than the painful area alone.

We focus on how your spine, nervous system, posture, stress load and recovery capacity work together, and how well your body is able to adapt.

Because when the system functions well, the body usually copes better.

When it does not, symptoms often start appearing in the places that are carrying the strain.

Start with a 20-minute consultation

Many Chiropractors talk about the nervous system

Many Chiropractors talk about influencing the nervous system.

And that is understandable.

Chiropractic has always had a close relationship with the spine and nervous system. The spine is not just a structural column. It protects the spinal cord, supports movement, and contains joints, muscles, ligaments and sensory receptors that constantly send information to the brain.

So yes, Chiropractic care can influence the nervous system.

But that statement alone is too broad.

Because almost everything influences the nervous system.

A slow breath.
A stressful email.
A poor night of sleep.
A cup of coffee.
A cold shower.
A walk in nature.
A difficult conversation.
A song.
A hug.
Smelling flowers.
A Chiropractic adjustment.

So the real question is not simply:

“Does this influence the nervous system?”

Of course it does.

The better questions are:

How does your nervous system appear to be functioning?
Can we assess it?
Can we track how it changes over time?
Can we adapt care based on your individual response?

That is where UMOYA’s approach becomes different.

Influencing is not the same as assessing

It is easy to say that something influences the nervous system.

It is harder, and more useful, to ask what is actually happening in the person in front of you.

At UMOYA, we do not want to simply assume that because the spine was adjusted, the nervous system improved.

That would be convenient.

It would also be a bit too easy, and the human body has shown very little interest in being easy.

Instead, we look for signs of how your system is functioning.

We want to understand:

  • how your spine moves
  • how your body holds tension
  • how posture and movement patterns are organised
  • how your system responds to load
  • how stress and recovery may be influencing your symptoms
  • whether the painful area is compensating for another area
  • whether your body appears more regulated or more protective
  • whether care is actually changing the pattern over time

This is why assessment matters.

Not as a formality.

Not as a box-ticking exercise.

But as the foundation for making better decisions.

Tracking change matters

Assessment is one part.

Tracking change is another.

Symptoms matter, of course. If you are in pain, tense, tired, stiff or not sleeping well, that matters.

But symptoms are not the only measure.

Some people feel better quickly, while the underlying pattern has not changed much.
Some people feel more aware of their body before they feel better.
Some people fluctuate before stabilising.
Some people improve in function before they notice major symptom changes.

This is why we do not want to rely only on how someone feels on a given day.

At UMOYA, we use clinical observation, examination findings, posture and movement assessment, and objective measurements where appropriate to track how your system changes over time.

This may include our UMOYA Resilience Scan, spinal and postural assessments, movement checks, re-examinations and other functional measures.

These tools do not replace clinical thinking.

They do not diagnose everything.

They do not reduce the human body to a dashboard, as tempting as that would be for those of us who enjoy tidy graphs and the illusion of control.

But they help reveal patterns.

And patterns are what matter when complaints keep returning.

Care should change when your system changes

If the nervous system changes, care should not always look exactly the same.

Your body is not static.

It changes with:

  • sleep
  • stress
  • training
  • work
  • illness
  • recovery
  • emotional load
  • nutrition
  • pain
  • daily habits
  • time

So why would care be identical every visit?

At UMOYA, we use assessment, observation and objective tracking to guide the type, location, intensity and timing of care.

Sometimes the system may need more direct input.
Sometimes it may need less.
Sometimes the neck is relevant.
Sometimes it is not.
Sometimes the pelvis is compensating.
Sometimes the upper back is the key area.
Sometimes the most important area is not where the pain is felt.

The goal is not to perform the same sequence every time.

The goal is to provide the most relevant input for that person, on that day, based on how their system presents and responds.

That is what individualised care should mean.

Not just changing the explanation while doing the same thing underneath.

Specificity matters

If Chiropractic care can influence the nervous system, then specificity should matter.

Where you adjust.
How you adjust.
Why you adjust.
Whether that input is relevant to the person in front of you.

Recent research suggests that where you adjust the spine can affect how the nervous system responds. In a 2024 randomised controlled trial, researchers compared a quick, small thrust applied to a clinically relevant neck vertebra with a thrust applied to a non-relevant neck vertebra. The adjustment at the relevant segment changed a measure of sensorimotor integration, but the adjustment at the non-relevant segment did not.

This does not mean one study proves everything.

It does not mean every adjustment creates a predictable brain change.

It does not mean we should make heroic claims about “rewiring” the nervous system after one visit. Please, no. The world has suffered enough from heroic claims.

But it does support a more thoughtful point:

Specific input matters.

And that is very different from treating every person with the same routine.

Not just going through the motions

Many people who have visited a Chiropractor before will recognise a familiar routine.

Lie down.
Neck adjusted one way.
Neck adjusted the other way.
Lie on one side. Crack.
Then the other side. Crack.
Lower back adjusted.
Middle back cracked.
Done.

It can feel thorough.

It can create several cracking sounds.

It may even give temporary relief.

But at UMOYA, we do not believe the nervous system should be treated as if it always needs the same input in the same places.

The question is not:

“Can we adjust everything?”

The better question is:

“What does this person’s system actually need today?”

That difference matters.

Because if the aim is to support better function, regulation and adaptability, then care should be based on assessment and response, not habit.

There is another way of doing Chiropractic.

That is the point.

The spine is important, but not isolated

The spine plays a central role in how the body functions.

It protects the spinal cord.
It supports movement.
It provides sensory feedback to the brain.
It interacts with posture, breathing, balance, muscle tone and movement control.

But the spine does not function in isolation.

It is connected to the rest of the body through the nervous system, connective tissues, muscles, joints, blood flow, breathing mechanics and stress physiology.

So at UMOYA, we do not look at the spine as a stack of bones that need to be “put back”.

We look at the spine as part of a living system.

A system that adapts.
Compensates.
Protects.
Recovers.
Learns.
Sometimes overreacts.
Sometimes under-recovers.
Sometimes keeps repeating the same pattern because nobody has asked a better question yet.

That is why our work is not just about the spine.

It is about how the spine and nervous system help the body organise itself.

What Neuro-Functional Chiropractic means at UMOYA

At UMOYA, we use the term Neuro-Functional Chiropractic to describe our focus on how the spine, nervous system and body function together.

This means we are interested in more than temporary symptom relief.

We want to understand how your body is:

  • adapting to stress
  • recovering from load
  • organising posture
  • coordinating movement
  • regulating muscle tension
  • compensating around restrictions
  • responding to Chiropractic input
  • changing over time

This is not about chasing a single “problem bone”.

It is not about cracking the painful area and calling it a nervous system adjustment.

It is about understanding the pattern.

Then applying care that is specific, measured and appropriate.

You can read more about this on our page about Neuro-Functional Integration.

What this means for you

People often come to UMOYA with complaints such as:

  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • headaches
  • posture-related tension
  • stiffness
  • recurring muscle tightness
  • sciatica-like symptoms
  • stress-related physical complaints
  • symptoms that improve temporarily, then return

But the goal is not simply to chase the symptom.

The goal is to understand why your body keeps producing the same pattern.

For some people, that means looking at spinal movement.
For others, stress and recovery are major factors.
For others, posture, breathing or training load play a role.
For others, the nervous system appears more protective or reactive.

Usually, it is not one thing.

It is a pattern.

And if you want a different outcome, the pattern needs to be understood.

Not guessed at.

Not standardised.

Not buried under a routine sequence of adjustments and motivational language.

Actually understood.

This approach is not for everyone

This way of working is not for everyone.

If you are looking for a quick crack and nothing more, UMOYA may not be the right fit.

If you want a one-off treatment without assessment, follow-up or a broader view, this may not be the right place.

If you only want temporary symptom relief and are not interested in how your body functions over time, our approach may feel more detailed than you want.

That is fine.

Different people want different things.

But if you are interested in understanding your body more deeply, improving how it functions, and exploring why complaints keep returning, then UMOYA may be worth considering.

Especially if you have already experienced the standard “same adjustments every visit” approach and wondered whether there is another way.

There is.

Start with a 20-minute consultation

If you are curious about UMOYA’s nervous system-focused approach, you can start with a 20-minute consultation.

This is a calm first conversation where we discuss:

  • what you are experiencing
  • how long it has been going on
  • what you have already tried
  • whether symptoms keep returning
  • whether stress, posture, sleep or recovery seem to play a role
  • whether our way of working seems suitable for your situation
  • what a logical next step may be

During this consultation, we do not perform a full examination or treatment.

No pressure.
No rush.
No routine adjustment sequence disguised as individualised care.

Just a first step to get clarity.

When should you contact your GP first?

Most musculoskeletal complaints are not dangerous, but some symptoms require medical assessment.

Contact your GP or emergency medical service first if your symptoms are accompanied by:

  • sudden weakness, numbness or loss of coordination
  • difficulty speaking, swallowing or walking
  • visual changes
  • severe dizziness or fainting
  • loss of bladder or bowel control
  • numbness around the saddle area
  • fever or feeling seriously unwell
  • unexplained weight loss
  • recent significant fall, accident or trauma
  • severe headache unlike anything you have had before
  • pain after a car accident or whiplash injury
  • a history of cancer
  • severe or rapidly worsening pain
  • symptoms that are worsening despite rest or normal care

When in doubt, seek medical advice first.

Less dramatic than letting the internet assemble a diagnosis out of panic and pop-ups, yes. Also less foolish.

Why choose UMOYA?

UMOYA Chiropractic is based in Maastricht and works from a Neuro-Functional view of health.

This means we do not only look at symptoms or joints in isolation.

We look at how your body functions, compensates, regulates, recovers and adapts.

Our approach is built around:

  • careful assessment
  • objective tracking where appropriate
  • spinal and nervous system function
  • posture and movement patterns
  • stress and recovery load
  • calm, precise care
  • individualised decision-making
  • function over spectacle
  • adaptation over routine

UMOYA may be especially suitable if you want to understand why complaints keep returning, rather than only chasing temporary relief.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nervous System-Focused Chiropractic

What is nervous system-focused Chiropractic?

Nervous system-focused Chiropractic looks at how the spine, nervous system and body function together.

At UMOYA, this means we assess how your body moves, compensates, regulates and adapts, rather than only focusing on where symptoms are felt.

Does Chiropractic influence the nervous system?

Chiropractic care can provide input to the joints, muscles and sensory systems connected to the nervous system.

But almost everything influences the nervous system in some way. The more useful question is whether we can assess how your system appears to function, track changes over time and adapt care based on your response.

How is UMOYA different from other Chiropractic approaches?

At UMOYA, we do not rely on a routine full-spine adjustment sequence.

We assess how your body presents, use objective tracking where appropriate, and adapt care based on how your system responds over time.

The goal is not to adjust everything. The goal is to provide relevant input.

Why does specificity matter in Chiropractic care?

If Chiropractic input can affect nervous system processing, then the location, method and relevance of that input may matter.

Research suggests that adjusting a clinically relevant spinal segment may produce different sensorimotor effects than adjusting a non-relevant segment, though more research is needed to understand the clinical significance.

At UMOYA, this supports our preference for specific, assessed and individualised care rather than routine adjustment patterns.

Do you measure the nervous system directly?

We do not claim to measure the entire nervous system directly. That would be a ridiculous claim, and frankly the nervous system deserves better than marketing nonsense.

What we do is assess functional signs and patterns related to regulation, adaptation, posture, movement, stress and recovery. We also use objective tools where appropriate, such as our UMOYA Resilience Scan, to track relevant changes over time.

What is the UMOYA Resilience Scan?

The UMOYA Resilience Scan is used to help us understand aspects of stress, recovery and physiological regulation.

It is not a stand-alone diagnosis. It is one piece of information that can help us observe patterns and track change over time.

Does this mean symptoms are ignored?

No.

Symptoms matter.

Pain, tension, stiffness, headaches, fatigue and other complaints are important signals.

But at UMOYA, we do not stop at the symptom. We ask what pattern may be contributing to it, and whether the body’s ability to adapt and recover is part of the problem.

Do you still adjust the spine?

Yes.

But adjustments are not performed as a routine sequence. They are based on assessment, relevance and how your system responds.

Sometimes care may include specific Chiropractic adjustments. Sometimes it may include gentler input or a different focus.

Is this approach suitable if I have already seen a Chiropractor before?

Yes, especially if your previous experience felt routine or short-term.

Many people recognise the experience of receiving the same areas adjusted in the same way each visit. At UMOYA, we take a more individualised approach based on assessment, tracking and response.

Is this approach suitable for everyone?

No.

If you are looking only for a quick crack or one-off symptom relief, UMOYA may not be the right fit.

If you are interested in understanding why complaints keep returning and improving function over time, our approach may be more suitable.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral to schedule a consultation.

If there are signs that medical assessment is needed first, we will tell you clearly.

Is Chiropractic care reimbursed?

Chiropractic care may be partly reimbursed through supplementary health insurance. This depends on your insurance provider and policy.

Check your policy conditions or visit our prices page.

What happens during the first consultation?

The first consultation is a conversation of about 20 minutes.

We discuss your complaint, your history, what you have already tried and whether UMOYA’s approach seems suitable.

No full examination or treatment takes place during this first conversation.
